Abstract
This course is an introduction to United States politics and government. It discusses the Constitution and its creation, the development of laws and regulations, and how citizens and other groups shape the policy process and policy outcomes. Primary topics include Congress, the presidency, courts, campaigns and elections, public opinion, civil rights and liberties, parties, special interest groups, political culture, and key aspects of policymaking. Students learn why and how the American government functions as it does and some of its key consequences. Throughout the course, we draw parallels between the concepts we discuss and current events as they unfold before us.
